Howard White KY6LA
(VE3GFW) built his first computer in 1958 ( a total of 4 bits) and
won a high school science fair that same year by connecting the
computer to a ham radio transmitter and sending digital counts (
0 to 15) from the computer over the air. Since then he earned a
Ph.D. in Engineering and wrote several technical books and publications
about the uses of digital radio communications. He holds some of
the earliest patents on mobile vehicle monitoring, tracking and
control systems using Digital Radio Communications. Howard
first became interested in Winlink when it became apparent to
many members of San Diego ARES ® that packet radio systems
were not only far too complicated for the average ham to use during
emergencies but also lacked easy access to the Internet to distribute
vital Emergency Traffic. Howard set up several Winlink EMCOMM
stations including those in use by the Coronado Emergency Radio
Operators Inc. In 2005, Howard was appointed to ARES® National
Task Force Digital Network Management Team which is working on
Winlink and other protocols for ARES® EMCOMM. Howard has been
involved with several Winlink EMCOMM efforts including Hurricane
Ivan, Tsunami and Hurricane Katrina.
This program is designed to show you how simple and easy
it is for the average ham to set up a fully functional Winlink
Station without spending a Lot of Money. We will go over the simple
equipment requirements. We will show you have easy and almost
automatic it is to install the software. Then and most important
we will show you how easy it is to send Email over Ham Radio.
Finally, if there is time, we can discuss current developments
in the use of Winlink for EMCOMM.
