Bio:
Wayne Burdick, N6KR, is Elecraft's Chief Technology Officer and
principle designer of the K2, K1 and KX1 transceivers. Prior to
founding Elecraft with Eric Swartz, WA6HHQ, Wayne created the
Wilderness Radio kits (NorCal 40A, Sierra, and SST), refinements
of his popular NorCal QRP Club designs. The NorCal 40A was also
the subject of an RF design text by Prof. David Rutledge, CalTech.
Wayne's efforts in the area of compact transceiver design were recognized
in 1998 when he was inducted into the QRP Hall of Fame. Wayne and
Eric jointly received the ARRL's Technical Excellence Award in 2001
for their Elecraft designs. Wayne holds a degree in Cognitive Science
from U.C. San Diego, and has worked for many years as a software/hardware
engineer, specializing in user interface design. Topic:

An Inside Look at the KX1 4-Band HF Transceiver
Wayne Burdick (N6KR) will discuss the various methods
Elecraft used to create the ultra-portable KX1 transceiver. The
KX1 is a complete, integrated HF station that measures only about
1.2 x 5.3 x 3.3 inches and weighs just over half a pound. Despite
its small size, the rig includes full coverage of the 80, 40,
30, and 20 meter bands; up to 4 watts output; built-in batteries
and automatic antenna tuner; an attached, plug-in keyer paddle;
and general-coverage CW/SSB/AM receiver with DDS VFO. The recent
addition of the fourth band -- 80 meters -- forced the designers
back to the lab, where they figured out how to use up the last
cubic centimeter of open space.
